What is a video capture card? A video capture card or DVR card
is a graphic card which can turn most PC's into a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The video capture card 'captures' the
signal from the security cameras and stores the video onto a hard drive for later retrieval and storage.
What type of video capture card do I need to build my own PC based security recorder? Always make sure to use a video card that is compatible with your existing motherboard. We suggest doing some research on the type of PC you currently own or are planning to use as your security recorder. There are minimum requirements for each capture card and therefore planning is the key to determining what type of security recorder you would like build.
Is it difficult to build my own PC based security recorder (DVR)? Once you've decide on the type of security system you want to build, simple order the capture card and installation is quick and easy. It's a simple as plugging the card into an empty PCI slot inside your PC, connecting the cable to the motherboard, installing the including software and than setting up your recording. Yes, there are a few more steps in between, but once these are done, simply connect your cameras, set your recording times and you are good!Some things to consider when building your own PC based security recorder:
- How many cameras will I use? Video capture cards are available with 4, 8, 12, 16 or 32 camera inputs.
- What frame rate do I want to record at? 30 FPS (real-time), 15 FPS, 5 FPS, etc
- What resolution do I want to record at? D1 (best), 4CIF, 2CIF, CIF or less
- How much hard drive space should I allow to store video?
- How long do I want to store recorded video?
- Does your state allow for the legal use of audio recording*?
